Why You’ll Love This Recipe
-
-
- Totally customizable for picky phases or allergies
- Takes under 5 minutes
- Naturally dairy-free and fiber-rich
- A great way to introduce healthy fats and protein early
- Encourages self-feeding and pincer grasp practice
-
Ingredients (Makes 1 Toddler Serving)
- 1/2 slice whole grain bread
- 2–3 tbsp mashed ripe avocado
- 1/2 of a hard- or soft-boiled chicken egg (or 1 whole quail egg), chopped or sliced
Optional: pinch of ground flaxseed, hemp seeds, or mild seasoning like a touch of lemon or garlic powder (skip salt for toddlers under 2)
Instructions:
- Cut the bread: You can cut crusts off for younger toddlers or slice into fingers or bite-sized squares for easy grabbing.
- Smash the avocado with a fork and spread evenly over the bread or leave it on the side if you toddlers are still discovering avocado.
- Top with chopped or sliced egg. Serve as-is or gently press it in so it sticks better for smaller hands.
- Serve warm or room temp. Pair with fruit, steamed veggies, or a yogurt pouch for a complete meal.
Dietitian Notes:
This toddler toast is more than just trendy—it’s full of key nutrients toddlers need daily:
- 🧠 Avocado – rich in healthy monounsaturated fats that support brain development and keep little tummies full
- 🥚 Eggs – a perfect first protein, packed with choline, vitamin B12, and iron for energy and learning
- 🍞 Whole grain bread – offers fiber to support digestion and sustained energy
Pro tip: For young toddlers, use mashed hard-boiled egg yolk (easy to digest) and offer the bread cut into strips.
Tips & Swaps
- Picky eater? Try grating the egg super fine or mixing it directly into the avocado
- Allergic to eggs? Use mashed white beans or soft tofu instead
- On the go? Make it into a sandwich and slice into triangles
- Need extra calories? Drizzle with olive oil or sprinkle with ground flax/hemp seeds
