HOW TO: fridgescapping
By RD & Food Stylist Elis Halenko & Nutrition Intern Gabby Romero
Design a beautiful and functional fridge!
Is this even a thing? Yes! Fridgescapping is a trend going viral on social media. But it’s not just about looks—it can also be useful when done right.
I’ve seen my fair share of impractical fridgescapes that focus only on design and decor, with little thought for function. But as a busy mom, dietitian and food stylist.. I just can’t stand a kitchen that doesn’t work well for me!
Why Try Fridgescaping?
With the holiday season upon us, I believe everyone deserves a fridge that looks beautiful and works well. The good news? You don’t need to spend lots of money to have an impressive fridgescape. Instead, simply shop your home. that meals looking through your pantry and kitchen for pieces that would enhance both the style and use of your fridge. Think: small picture frames, unique bowls, glass tupperwares, jugs, and small decorative objects.
Affordable Ways to Find Pieces
If you truly feel you lack items that inspire your fridgescape, don’t worry. I recommend shopping at a thrift store or your local dollar store – they often have useful kitchen storage pieces at an affordable price.
In this blog, I will take you through the essentials of setting up your fridgescape, what makes or breaks your set up and how to source inexpensive pieces to take your styling to the next level.
The Basics: Before you start designing your fridgescape, let’s go over the basics of what this entails. The 3 main things you will need are:
1) DECLUTTER: remove and clean everything from your fridge. Go through all expired items and recycle their containers, combine items like those 2 jars of peanut butter into 1, and wipe all surfaces clean!
2) ORGANIZE: Now, start to organize your fridge by FUNCTION first. Put tall and less used items in the back, remove labels on some condiments or turn them away so you don’t forget what they are, place commonly used items or foods that have a short expiration in the front.
3) DESIGN: Finally, once you organize your fridge, that’s when you can add fun elements or little surprises, such as little ceramic or wooden ornaments, a picture frame with a family portrait or a surprise candy jar!
It might seem silly to put this much effort into organizing and designing the inside of your fridge. Yet fridgescaping has real benefits:
- It inspires new meal ideas when you can actually see everything you have.
- It reduces food waste because nothing gets lost in the back
- It makes you smile every time you reach in the fridge to grab a snack.
So, give it a try and stay tuned for more fun design projects!
